Organization's donations surpass $1.2 million
The United Way of Etowah County sailed onto "Victory
Island" Thursday with a treasure chest overflowing with
donations totaling more than $1.3 million.
The official results for the 2007 United
Way campaign "Destination
Victory Island" were announced at the victory celebration
luncheon at Convention Hall in Gadsden.
The drive surpassed its goal of $1.2 million.
During the celebration, fund-raising volunteers, loaned
executives and campaign committee chairmen announced their
individual totals for the campaign and recognized companies
and individuals who made notable contributions.
Pacesetter chairman Matt Hayes announced a record-setting
$652,155 total for the Pacesetter campaign this year.
Kendall Lowe-Hamilton, campaign chairwoman, said she was
amazed by the impact the United Way was making on the community
and was thankful to the companies and individuals who contributed.
"By bridging together a variety of community leaders
- from business, government and local citizens - United Way
can identify what the major problems are in our community
and then work together to find solutions," she said.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and United
Steelworkers of America Local 12 led the way with $192,291
in contributions. Among the other largest contributors
to the campaign were Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Riverview
Regional Medical Center and Alabama Power.
Jay Mid-South ran its first United Way campaign and was
awarded the Rookie of the Year award for raising $12,070.
Money raised during this campaign will go to aid more than
25 nonprofit agencies and programs in the Etowah County area.
